Not Dead, Just Tumblin!

Hey guys, I post to Tumblr these days, and have been neglecting to do double posts to blogger.  I find the Blogger editor to be sort of cumbersome, and I like Tumblr's easy sense of connectivity.  I just might quit Blogger altogether... though of course some people have a blog and a tumblr and a deviant art and a twitter and god knows what else.  Maybe someday I'll be good about reaching multiple platforms but for now, I'm going to be Tumblring.

Tauriel, Weta Collectible

Hello! I finally get to share my sculpture of The Hobbit's Tauriel, now that she's been revealed at San Diego Comic Con 2013!  I was working at Weta Workshop in 2011 and begged to get to sculpt pretty much the only female collectible among all those smelly dwarves!  It was a lot of hard work for me and a long process, being my first experience making a 1/6 scale figurine. I learned so much from everybody at the shop, and was well directed along the way.  I used Green Hard Chavant NSP.  The tree was sculpted by Steven Saunders, and the weapons were made by Leonard Ellis.  I still haven't seen her fully painted, I only got to see the beginning stages as Dordi Moen was painting her. The final product looks so lovely and amazing.

Nerdy points of fun- Evangeline Lilly kindly sitting for me and letting me take photos to get her likeness (I hope you approve Miss Evangeline!), and getting to play with Tauriel's beautiful Bow and arrows!

Photos were taken from The Fwoosh.com, Itakon.it, statueforum.com, and some were found on tumblr. Also thanks to personal friends who went out and snapped pics for me too!

    Suit

Here is a space suit lady! My sense of technical design ...maybe design in general is very lacking, so the approach here is very "just kinda go with it" slash "whatever".  Hm. Very very excited about all the Sci Fi films coming up this summer!

    Dr. Sketchy

This month's Dr.Sketchy entry, our model was Artemis Bare! Got to try my new pad of newsprint paper, in a convenient B4 size. Probably haven't used newsprint since college, I miss it!  Now if only charcoal wasn't so messy...  Used colored pencil instead.

    Innernets cats!

Internet cats!  I did these with some really fun neon colored pencils. It was a total pain to try to get into the computer and it’s still not like how it looks on paper.  Kind of a shame, but they’re fun in person :)

    Dredd 3D

I really liked Dredd 3D! Such a fun ride all the way through. Here's Judge Anderson and her Superior, Chief Judge. I'll have to do another with Anderson being more badass.

    Suntory Time

Here's my Bob Harris, finally.  It's Bill Murray of course in Lost In Translation.  I'm hoping to catch more expressions from this scene,  there's so many more that look like fun to draw :)

    Sleeping on the train

Sketching on the train, so fun getting a sleeping subject to stare at shamelessly.  Not creepy at all....

"Well, I guess she's more around your age"

"You guys could talk about things in common, like growing up in the fifties. Maybe she liked the movies you did in the seventies when you were still making them."

Here's another study of Charlotte.  I failed at making something streamlined enough to be animatable, but well, maybe it is comic book style...

    Train Sketches + Wego!

Some sketches of people on the train on the way to Wonder Festival 2013 Winter.  Most people too busy looking on their phones to notice I'm staring at them.

And look what I bought today! Wego! The green one, isn't he handsome?!

    Charlotte In Translation

Lost In Translation by Sofia Coppola is my favorite movie.  So so difficult to choose a "favorite" because I love so so many movies.  But not only is this a thoughtful, bittersweet, funny, amazing movie, with an incredible soundtrack.. It's also a beautiful tribute to perhaps my favorite place on earth- Tokyo.  I'm currently living here in Tokyo, just for a short time.. But I'm hoping to absorb the place in my memories, in a way I think Sofia's movie somehow captures.

Here are some sketches of the character Charlotte, played of course by Scarlett Johansson.  It's really difficult for me, but I'm trying to simplify my drawing towards what might be used in animation. I think I still have to push further, but I enjoy these studies at least.  I'll keep trying though.

    Mr. Kazu sent premium fantasy

Posting again, since the first time I lazily just did a phone-pic upload instead of scan.. and I added some figure sketches as well.  The more recent post is a giveaway to what movie she is from.. Oh well! This scene cracks me up every time!

Figure Drawing at Dr. Sketchy with Rosie Rivets and Bee Tiny Tott

    Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Some free-form-ish doodles.  As I'm trying to figure myself out, this sort of linework feels natural to me, so maybe I'll keep going with it.
