Charlotte In Translation

Lost In Translation by Sofia Coppola is my favorite movie.  So so difficult to choose a "favorite" because I love so so many movies.  But not only is this a thoughtful, bittersweet, funny, amazing movie, with an incredible soundtrack.. It's also a beautiful tribute to perhaps my favorite place on earth- Tokyo.  I'm currently living here in Tokyo, just for a short time.. But I'm hoping to absorb the place in my memories, in a way I think Sofia's movie somehow captures.

Here are some sketches of the character Charlotte, played of course by Scarlett Johansson.  It's really difficult for me, but I'm trying to simplify my drawing towards what might be used in animation. I think I still have to push further, but I enjoy these studies at least.  I'll keep trying though.

Posting again, since the first time I lazily just did a phone-pic upload instead of scan.. and I added some figure sketches as well.  The more recent post is a giveaway to what movie she is from.. Oh well! This scene cracks me up every time!

Some free-form-ish doodles.  As I'm trying to figure myself out, this sort of linework feels natural to me, so maybe I'll keep going with it.

Animal, turnaround

I realize I never actually posted turnaround shots of my Animal sculpture.  The paint stage isn't complete in these shots, but it's the best turnaround I have of it at the moment.  Ugh.. and they're kinda blown out. Oh well.

F*kin six years ago...

Found a reeeeally old sketchbook from pre-blog days. 2006...!  I was enjoying toned paper, with pops of white and red prismacolor pencils, watercolor, copic markers.  Was using hi-tec Cs quite a bit too.  I need to draw and experiment a lot more.....
